The Vikings came from Denmark and Norway and first raided Britain in AD 789. They settled in many parts of eastern England and Scotland. The area of England they controlled became known as the Danelaw. King Alfred the Great of Wessex defeated the Vikings and is credited with beginning the process of unifying the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms into one kingdom of England.
