The Magna Carta (1215)

The Magna Carta was signed in 1215 at Runnymede, near Windsor. It was an agreement between King John and his rebellious barons. The Magna Carta established the important principle that the king was subject to the law, not above it. It protected the rights of the nobility and limited the king's power to raise taxes without consent. The Magna Carta is considered one of the foundations of constitutional government.
