In 1688, Protestant leaders invited William of Orange (from the Netherlands) to invade England and replace the Catholic King James II. This largely peaceful transfer of power is called the Glorious Revolution. In 1689, the Bill of Rights was passed, which: • Confirmed the rights of Parliament • Limited the powers of the monarch • Established that the monarch cannot raise taxes or maintain an army without Parliament's agreement • Established the principle of parliamentary sovereignty
