Julius Caesar led an unsuccessful Roman invasion in 55 BC. In AD 43, Emperor Claudius led a successful invasion. The Romans occupied most of Britain for nearly 400 years. They built roads, public buildings, and a structure of law. Boudicca, queen of the Iceni, led a famous rebellion. Emperor Hadrian built Hadrian's Wall in northern England to keep out the Picts. Christianity first appeared in Britain during the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.
