During the Middle Ages, the English legal system developed significantly. Common law — law based on custom and court decisions rather than written statutes — became established. Trial by jury also became common. The feudal system structured society into a hierarchy: the king at the top, followed by nobles, knights, and peasants. After the Black Death, this rigid social structure began to change.
