PRINCE2 (Project Management)
The most recognised project-management certificate in the UK, and quick to get.

What it is
PRINCE2 is a structured method for running projects, and it is the most widely recognised project-management certificate with UK employers. A project is simply a piece of work with a clear start, end and goal, such as launching a product or moving an office. PRINCE2 gives you a common system for planning it, tracking it and reporting on it. It comes in two stages: Foundation (the basics) and Practitioner (applying the method). Both are assessed by multiple-choice exams, not essays.
Who it suits
This suits people who already have some work experience and want to move into a coordinating or managing role, across many industries: IT, construction, business and more. It is not really a first job for someone brand new to UK work, because employers want to see you apply the method to real work. The multiple-choice format makes it more approachable than essay-based qualifications, so it works well for career-changers with medium English who want a recognised credential quickly.
How you qualify
- Take a Foundation course and pass its multiple-choice exam. This covers the principles and terms.
- Take the Practitioner course and exam, which tests whether you can apply the method to a project scenario.
- Many training providers bundle both stages into a single course, often around a week long, with the exams sat at the end.
Cost and how long it takes
Expect roughly £600 to £1,500 including training and both exams, and many people complete the lot in about 1 week. That fast timeline is a genuine attraction: few recognised business credentials are this quick. One important caution: these fees should be checked before you budget, because exam and course prices change. Confirm the current cost with PeopleCert (the body that runs the exams) and your chosen training provider before you book.
The English you need
The English bar is medium. The exams are multiple-choice and written in English, so you need to read and understand business and project terms confidently, but you are not writing essays. If your English is around that level you should manage. If it is weaker, build it up first, since the exam questions can be wordy and the Practitioner scenario takes careful reading. An ESOL course is a sensible step zero if reading English under time pressure worries you.
The honest reality
A certificate is not a job. PRINCE2 formalises and proves project skills, but on its own it does not make you a project manager in employers' eyes. It works best paired with real work experience that shows you have run or supported projects. People sometimes pay for the week-long course expecting it to launch a new career by itself, then find employers still want a track record. Treat PRINCE2 as the credential that backs up your experience, not a shortcut around it. Be wary of providers implying it guarantees a project-management job. It is also worth knowing that PMP and Agile/Scrum are alternative project qualifications you may see employers ask for.
What you can earn
PRINCE2 supports roles from project coordinator up to project manager and PMO (project management office) positions across many industries. Pay depends on the industry, the region and your experience, so treat any figure you come across as a rough estimate rather than a guarantee. The credential's main value is widening the range of project roles you can credibly apply for.
Your next step
If you already have some project or coordinating experience, book a combined Foundation and Practitioner course, and confirm the total price and current exam fees with PeopleCert and the provider before you pay. If project work is new to you, look for ways to support a project in your current job first, so the qualification lands on real experience.
