Life in UK
About us

Built by someone who moved here too

Life in the UK is an independent site for people settling in the United Kingdom. Free practice for the Life in the UK Test, plain English guides for every stage of the journey, and tools that do the hard counting for you.

Why this site exists

Hello, I am Ryan. I moved to the United Kingdom from China on a Skilled Worker visa, as a software engineer.

The job turned out to be the easy part. Everything around it was not. Registering with a GP, applying for a National Insurance number, making sense of a tenancy agreement, working out which visa route led where, and eventually sitting the Life in the UK Test. Each one had an official page somewhere, written for people who already understood how the system worked.

So I kept a folder of notes for myself. This site is that folder, rewritten and checked, so the next person does not have to start from nothing.

What you will find here

Life in the UK Test preparation: practice questions with explanations, mock exams under real exam conditions, the full handbook, and a keyword pairing mode for people who find memorising hard.

Guides for the five stages of settling: visas, indefinite leave to remain, citizenship, everyday life, and your career.

Free tools, including an ILR residence calculator and a citizenship days calculator, so you do not have to count absences by hand.

Who it is for

Everyone on a legal route to settlement. Workers and their families, students, partners and spouses, refugees, people arriving later in life, and people with disabilities.

We do not assume you already speak fluent English. Many people who have to sit this test are starting from zero, and the official material rarely allows for that. Our content is written in plain English and translated into 12 languages.

How we keep it honest

Every guide cites its source on gov.uk and carries the date it was last checked. Rules change and fees change, so we would rather show you where a number came from than ask you to take our word for it.

We are an independent service. We are not affiliated with the UK Government, the Home Office or the DVSA, and we cannot give advice on your personal immigration case.

Tell me what is missing

If something here is wrong, out of date, or simply not covered, I want to hear about it. Suggestions from people going through it themselves are how this site gets better.
