What it is

Digital marketing is promoting products and services online: search, social media, email, ads and websites. There is no single licence for it. Instead there is a ladder of credentials you can climb from free to professional, which makes it one of the friendliest white-collar routes for newcomers. The smartest place to start, especially if money or English is tight, is the free Google Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course. It is open to anyone, costs nothing, and is assessed by multiple-choice questions rather than essays.

Who it suits

This suits career-changers who want office or remote work and like the idea of a practical, hands-on field rather than an academic one. Because the first rung is free and low-English, it is genuinely open to people on a tight budget and to those whose English is still growing. The exams are multiple-choice, which is kinder to non-native speakers than essay-based courses. It is a good fit if you are comfortable on a computer and willing to learn by doing.

How you qualify

Climb the ladder one rung at a time. You do not need to do them all.

  1. Google Fundamentals of Digital Marketing (free, low to medium English). Start here. It builds confidence and gives you the basics at zero cost and zero risk.
  2. Google Digital Marketing certificate on Coursera (around £40 per month, total under £240 over 6 months). This is more job-focused and practical.
  3. DMI Pro diploma (around £1,300 to £2,100, 8 to 10 weeks). A recognised professional diploma with a multiple-choice exam and open entry.
  4. CIM is the chartered, gold-standard option (Level 3 computer-based exam around £250, plus you must study through an accredited centre). It needs high English and is a later step, not a starting point.

Cost and how long it takes

You can begin for free with Google Fundamentals and finish it in a matter of weeks. If you go further, the Google Coursera certificate is around £40 per month (total under £240 over 6 months), the DMI Pro diploma is about £1,300 to £2,100 over 8 to 10 weeks, and CIM Level 3 is around £250 for the exam plus the cost of an accredited centre. Course prices change, so confirm the current fee before you pay.

The English you need

The free Google Fundamentals course needs only low to medium English, which is exactly why it is the right first step for this audience. The paid diplomas (DMI Pro, Google Coursera) sit at medium English. CIM, the chartered route, needs high English. If your English is weak, start free with Google, build both your skills and your confidence, and only move up the ladder as your English grows. If you find even the free course hard going, an ESOL course first will pay off.

The honest reality

A certificate is not a job, and digital marketing is a competitive field where employers care about what you can actually do. The good news is that the practical skills you build (running a real ad, writing posts, reading the numbers) are what get you hired, and you can start showing them off after the free course. Do not feel pushed into an expensive diploma straight away. Many people get value from the free and low-cost rungs first, then pay for a diploma only once they know the field is for them. Be cautious of any course promising guaranteed work.

What you can earn

Digital marketing roles range from executive and coordinator up to specialist work in SEO, social media or paid ads, and some people go self-employed. Pay depends heavily on the employer, your skills and the region, so treat any number you see as a rough estimate rather than a promise. The field is remote-friendly, which widens the jobs you can reach.

Your next step

Start today with the free Google Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course. It costs nothing, needs only basic English, and tells you quickly whether this path suits you. Once you have it, decide whether to climb to a paid diploma. You can find the official courses linked below.
