What it is

The CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) runs the UK's best-known professional marketing qualifications. They are seen as the gold standard for marketers who want a recognised, chartered credential. You study through an approved study centre and progress up levels, from Foundation (Level 3) through the Certificate (Level 4) and Diploma (Level 6) to a Level 7 leadership programme.

Who it suits

It suits people who already work in, or are moving into, professional marketing and want their skills formally recognised: marketing executives, managers and future directors. It is not an open, free beginner course. If you just want a first taste of marketing, a free or open online course is a better and cheaper starting point. This one is for building a long-term marketing career.

How you qualify

  1. Choose a CIM-accredited study centre and the right level for you. Many people start at Level 4.
  2. Join CIM as a member, which you must hold while you study.
  3. Study the modules, then complete the assessments, which are written assignments and case studies rather than multiple-choice exams.

You pass each level's modules to gain that qualification, then move up to the next level.

Cost and how long it takes

Costs come in three parts: tuition paid to your study centre, CIM membership of about £65 a year, and assessment fees of roughly £250–870 depending on the level. Study-centre tuition varies widely, from around £1,000 to over £2,500 per level. Realistically, budget about £1,000–3,500 for a single level all in. Each level typically takes 9 to 12 months of part-time study, and the full chartered path runs over several years. Please check current fees with CIM and your chosen centre, as they change every year.

The English you need

This route needs strong, fluent English. The assessments are written assignments and case-study reports, so you must be able to plan, structure and write clear business English to deadlines. There are no multiple-choice shortcuts here. If your English is still developing, this qualification would be very hard, and your money is better spent building English first, then starting with a free introductory marketing course.

The honest reality

The CIM name carries weight, but the qualification alone will not land you a marketing job without practical experience and a portfolio of real work. Employers hire on results as much as certificates. Be careful not to overspend on high levels too early: many people get more value from one well-chosen level plus hands-on experience than from rushing to Level 7. Treat it as a boost to a career you are already building, not a guaranteed entry ticket.

What you can earn

These are estimates and vary by employer, sector and location, with London higher. A marketing executive in the UK might earn around £24k–30k, a marketing manager around £35k–50k, and marketing or brand directors considerably more. A CIM qualification can support a pay rise and promotion, but it works alongside experience and proven results, not instead of them.

Your next step

Look at the CIM qualifications pages to see which level fits your experience, then contact an accredited study centre for their tuition fees. If you are new to marketing or your English is still growing, start with a free or open beginner course and some hands-on practice first. Come back to CIM when you have experience to build on and the English to handle written assignments.
