CIPD (HR)
The standard UK qualification for an HR career. Assignment-based, so English-heavy.
CIPD
What it is
CIPD is the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the professional body for human resources (HR) in the UK. A CIPD qualification is close to a standard requirement for an HR career here, in the same way a driving licence is for a delivery job. It comes in three levels: Level 3 Foundation (the entry level, open to anyone), Level 5 Associate (mid-career), and Level 7 Advanced (master's level). You are assessed by written assignments, not by exams, so instead of sitting in a test hall you hand in pieces of academic writing over the course.
Who it suits
This route suits career-changers and office workers who want a settled, respected white-collar job and already have solid English. HR work is about people, policy and paperwork: hiring, contracts, pay, training and handling problems at work. Level 3 is open access, which means you do not need a degree or prior HR experience to start. It is a strong fit if you are confident reading and writing English. It is not a low-English starting point. If your English is still developing, treat this as a goal to build toward rather than your first step.
How you qualify
- Start with Level 3 Foundation. Anyone can enrol, no prior study needed.
- Choose a CIPD-approved study centre. Most people study online or part-time around a job.
- Complete the written assignments for each unit. There are no exams to revise for, but each assignment is marked like a piece of coursework.
- Progress to Level 5 Associate and later Level 7 Advanced if you want to reach senior or manager level. These higher levels usually expect prior study, a degree, or real HR experience first.
Cost and how long it takes
Level 3 costs about £1,700 to £2,500, and most people finish it in 8 to 12 months while working. On top of the course fee you pay CIPD membership. Level 5 and Level 7 cost more and take longer. Fees vary between study centres and change over time, so confirm the current price with the provider before you commit.
The English you need
Be honest with yourself here. The bar is medium to high, and the demand is specifically academic writing. Everything is assessed through written assignments, so you need to plan, structure and write clear English essays, not just hold a conversation. If your written English is not yet at that level, the most sensible move is step zero: take a free or low-cost ESOL course and build up your writing first. That protects the money you would otherwise spend on a course you are not ready to pass.
The honest reality
A qualification is not a job. CIPD opens doors and is widely recognised by UK employers, but you still apply for roles and compete for them, usually starting as an HR administrator or assistant. The biggest hidden cost is not money, it is the writing. People underestimate how much academic English the assignments demand and then struggle. Be wary of any provider promising a guaranteed HR job at the end. A reputable centre is upfront that the qualification supports your job hunt rather than replacing it. The upside is real: HR is office-based, stable, and the same credential carries you all the way up the ladder.
What you can earn
Pay in HR rises as you climb the ladder, from HR administrator and assistant at the start, up to HR business partner, manager and eventually director. Treat any figure you see online as a rough estimate, not a promise: your actual pay depends on the employer, the region, your level and your experience. The clear pattern is that each CIPD level you complete, paired with experience, moves you toward the better-paid roles.
Your next step
If your written English is already strong, enrol on a CIPD Level 3 Foundation course with an approved study centre and budget for membership on top of the fee. If your writing is not there yet, book an ESOL course first and come back to CIPD once you can write clear English essays with confidence.
