The UK population is about 67.6 million (2022 estimate) and grew significantly over centuries — from about 4 million in 1600 to 40 million by 1901 and over 60 million today. The population is unequally distributed: England has around 84%, Scotland just over 8%, Wales around 5%, and Northern Ireland less than 3%. The UK has an ageing population, with record numbers aged 85 and over. Nearly 10% of the population has a parent or grandparent born outside the UK.
