Local Government and Councils

Local government is run by elected councils. They provide: • Education (schools) • Social services • Housing • Environmental services (rubbish collection, recycling) • Local planning and building control • Libraries • Local roads and transport Councils are funded by Council Tax (based on property value) and central government grants. Local councillors are elected in local elections, and many areas also have elected mayors.
