Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727), born in Lincolnshire, was one of the most influential scientists in history. Educated at Cambridge University, he was an early member of the Royal Society. His most famous work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687), showed how gravity applies to the whole universe. Newton also discovered that white light is made up of the colours of the rainbow. Many of his discoveries remain foundational to modern science.
