Chapter 1 requires understanding of: the origin of values underlying British society; the five fundamental principles of British life (democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, tolerance, participation); the responsibilities and freedoms of permanent residents; and the process of becoming a permanent resident or citizen. All 24 test questions can draw from any part of the handbook.
