William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. He is the most famous writer in the English language. Major works include: • Tragedies: Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet • Comedies: A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night • Histories: Henry V, Richard III The Globe Theatre in London has been reconstructed near its original site. His birthday (23 April) is also St George's Day.
