Chapter 4 · Modern Society

Languages of the UK

Source: Handbook p.68

English is the main language of the UK, with many regional accents and dialects. In Wales, Welsh is a completely different language and is taught in schools and universities — the Welsh government publishes in both Welsh and English. In Scotland, Gaelic is spoken in parts of the Highlands and Islands. In Northern Ireland, some people speak Irish Gaelic. The Life in the UK test is normally taken in English, but special arrangements can be made for Welsh or Scottish Gaelic.
