Football in the UK

Football is the UK's most popular sport. The first professional clubs formed in the late 19th century. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have separate leagues. The English Premier League attracts a huge international audience. UK teams compete in UEFA Champions League. Each country has its own national team in the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Football Championships. England's only major international trophy was the 1966 World Cup, hosted in the UK and captained by Bobby Moore.
