How Much Does the Life in the UK Test Cost?
Published 9 July 2026
The Life in the UK Test costs £50. You pay this once, online, at the moment you book your test. The fee is the same everywhere in the UK, and it covers one sitting of the test. There are no hidden charges added at the test centre.
This guide explains what the £50 pays for, when you can get it back, and what the cost is if you do not pass the first time.
What is the Life in the UK Test fee?
The fee is £50 for each test you book. You cannot pay at the door or pay in cash on the day. You must book and pay online in advance, at least 3 days before the date you want to sit the test.
When you book, you pay with a debit or credit card. As soon as the payment goes through, your test is confirmed and you get a booking confirmation by email.
What does the £50 fee include?
The £50 covers:
- One booking at an official test centre near you.
- The 45 minute test itself, with 24 questions.
- The result on the day. You find out straight away whether you passed.
- A pass notification letter if you pass, which you use in your citizenship or settlement application.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Life in the UK Test (one sitting) | £50 |
| Booking fee | Included |
| Result on the day | Included |
| Retake after a fail | £50 again |
Do you have to pay anything else on the day?
No. When you arrive at the test centre you do not pay again. You only need to bring the correct ID. The £50 you already paid online is the full cost of the test.
The name on your booking must match the name on your ID exactly. If it does not match, the centre can refuse to let you sit the test, and you would lose your £50.
What happens to the fee if you fail?
There is no free second attempt. If you do not pass, you must book a new test and pay another £50. You can do this as many times as you need. There is no limit on how many times you can take the test.
The good news is that you can book again quickly. Many people who fail book a new date soon after and pass on the next try. To avoid paying £50 more than once, it is worth practising with mock tests until you score well before you book.
Can you get a refund or change your booking?
You can get your £50 back, but only if you give enough notice:
- Cancel at least 3 days (72 hours) before your test: you get a full refund to the card you used to pay.
- Cancel or change within 3 days of your test: you do not get a refund, and you lose the £50.
- Do not turn up on the day: you lose the £50 with no refund.
If the test centre cancels your test, you can ask for a refund. You must ask within 3 months of the test date.
To cancel or change a test, sign in to your Life in the UK account online and manage your booking there.
How do you pay for the test?
You pay when you book, in these steps:
- Create an account on the official Life in the UK Test website.
- Choose a test centre and a date at least 3 days ahead.
- Enter your details, using the exact name on your ID.
- Pay the £50 with a debit or credit card.
- Keep the confirmation email safe.
You do not need to pay by bank transfer or any other method. The card payment is the only way.
Where the test fee fits in your wider costs
The £50 test fee is small compared with the other costs of settling in the UK. The Life in the UK Test is usually one step on the way to Indefinite Leave to Remain (settlement) or British citizenship. Those applications have their own, much larger fees, and many people also pay separately for an English language test.
So when you plan your budget, treat the £50 as the cost of this one test only. It is a fixed, one time charge for each sitting, and passing it is a requirement you clear once. After you pass, you do not need to take the Life in the UK Test again, even if you apply for settlement first and citizenship later.
Before you spend the £50, make sure you are ready. Working through free practice questions until you pass them comfortably is the simplest way to make sure your single £50 is all you need to spend.
