How to Apply for a National Insurance Number

Published 21 July 2026

A National Insurance (NI) number is a personal number that keeps your tax and National Insurance contributions recorded under your name. You need one to work in the UK, so it is an important early step when you settle. This guide explains how to get one. For other first steps, see our guides on opening a bank account and registering with a GP.

Who needs one

You need a National Insurance number to work in the UK and to be taxed correctly. To apply you must:

  • live in the UK,
  • have the right to work in the UK, and
  • be working, about to start work, or looking for work.

Your NI number stays the same for life, so once you have it, keep it safe and reuse it.

How to apply

  1. Apply online on gov.uk.
  2. Prove your identity — usually online. If you cannot prove it online, you may be asked to attend an appointment in person.
  3. Wait for your number — it can take up to 4 weeks after your identity is confirmed. It is sent to you, and you can also view it in your personal tax account.

You can start work before it arrives

You do not have to wait for your NI number to start a job. You can begin work as soon as you can prove your right to work to your employer. Tell your employer you have applied, and give them the number once you receive it. Your employer will then record your contributions correctly.

Keep it safe

Treat your National Insurance number like other personal details: share it with your employer, HMRC and official services, but be careful with it, as scammers sometimes ask for it. Once you have it, you are set up to work and pay tax properly in the UK.
