How to Get Your Overseas Qualifications Recognised in the UK
Published 10 July 2026
If you studied or trained outside the UK, employers here may not immediately know what your qualifications mean. Getting them recognised helps you compete for jobs, apply for further study, or register to work in a regulated profession. Here is how it works.
UK ENIC: comparing your qualification
UK ENIC is the national agency that compares international qualifications to UK ones. You can apply for a Statement of Comparability, a certificate that shows the closest UK level to your qualification.
- It works for academic, vocational and many professional qualifications recognised in your home country.
- It gives your qualification context on job and university applications.
- It is guidance, not a legal document — the final decision about a job or course is made by the employer or institution.
UK ENIC uses a framework to find the nearest UK equivalent, so a degree or diploma earned abroad can be understood by people who do not know your country's system.
Regulated professions need a professional body
Some jobs are regulated — you cannot legally do them without registering with the right UK body, whatever your overseas qualification says. Examples include:
- Doctors and nurses — the relevant healthcare regulator.
- Teachers — Qualified Teacher Status where required.
- Solicitors, accountants, engineers and others — their respective professional bodies.
Each regulator has its own recognition route, which may include extra exams, supervised practice or an English test. If your profession is regulated, contact the professional body directly and early, because this process can take time.
Practical steps
- Gather your documents — certificates, transcripts and, where needed, certified English translations.
- Decide what you need — a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability for general recognition, and/or a professional body for a regulated job.
- Apply and keep copies — you will reuse these documents for job and, later, settlement applications.
Getting recognised early means you can apply for the right level of job sooner, rather than starting below your experience. For the next steps into UK work, see our other career guides.
