How to Apply for British Citizenship: An Overview

Published 10 July 2026

Becoming a British citizen is usually the final step in a long journey. This overview explains, in plain terms, who can apply and what the process looks like. It is a starting point. Always check the official GOV.UK pages for the rules that apply to your own situation.

Who can apply?

Most people become British citizens through a process called naturalisation. In general, to apply as an adult you need to:

  • Be 18 or over.
  • Normally hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settled status, usually for at least 12 months.
  • Have lived in the UK legally for a set number of years.
  • Meet the English language requirement.
  • Pass the Life in the UK Test (unless you are exempt).
  • Be of good character.

The rules are slightly different if you are married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen.

The main steps

  1. Check that you meet the requirements on GOV.UK.
  2. Pass the Life in the UK Test if you have not already.
  3. Prepare your documents and referees.
  4. Complete the online application and pay the fee.
  5. Give your biometric information.
  6. Wait for a decision. If successful, you attend a citizenship ceremony.

Where the Life in the UK Test fits

The Life in the UK Test is one requirement you usually clear once. After you pass it, you do not need to take it again, even if you apply for settlement first and citizenship later. Preparing well for the test is one of the simplest parts of the journey to get right.

Read the official guidance before you apply, as fees and rules can change.
