The First World War (WWI) lasted from 1914 to 1918. Key facts:
• Triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
• Britain fought alongside France, Russia, and later the USA against Germany and Austria-Hungary
• Trench warfare on the Western Front
• Enormous casualties — about 2 million British and Empire troops killed or wounded
• Led to the break-up of empires (Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian)
• Women entered the workforce in large numbers
• Women over 30 gained the vote in 1918
