The British Empire at its Peak

During the Victorian period (1837-1901), the British Empire grew to cover all of India, Australia and large parts of Africa, becoming the largest empire in history with over 400 million people. Between 1853 and 1913, around 13 million British citizens emigrated. People also came to Britain from around the Empire. Supporters believed the Empire brought trade; critics felt it was over-expanded. Eventually most colonies gained independence in the 20th century, transitioning to the Commonwealth.
